Her music looks back as far as the 1920's and 30's, with her piano giving the songs a music-hall bounce, while her lyrics are unmistakably modern: confessional, self-doubting, occasionally awkward and determinedly personal. "I think he let me down when he didn't disappoint me," she admits in "Get Him Back." As she plunges into her latest miseries, her music finds something droll in the cycle of love and betrayal. Yet there's a new layer of perspective on her magnificent third album, "Extraordinary Machine" (Epic/Clean Slate). Her romances are still a shambles, and she painstakingly splits the blame between her lovers and herself. Apple, 28, has grown into a wry self-consciousness. With her low, melancholy voice and the tortured conscience of her lyrics, Fiona Apple never seemed cut out for comedy.
